As our nation marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, there’s no better time for visiting the Commonwealth of Virginia, a place intricately interwoven in our country’s foundation and front and center for the Semiquincentennial. One of the signature VA250 events happening in 2026 is Sail250® Virginia, in which Virginia Beach is designated as one of the affiliate harbors welcoming the international fleet of ships in June. Widely known as a premier entertainment city, Virginia Beach will also host a number of other incredible 250th-related events throughout the year.

Experience Local History

Along with offering excellent events, Virginia Beach is also home to significant historic sites and places. As a project of the United States’ early government, the original Cape Henry Lighthouse was completed in 1792. In 1881, the second Cape Henry Lighthouse was constructed and today both historic landmarks remain standing on the Fort Story Military Base not far from the 1607 “First Landing” of the English settlers who were in route to Jamestown. More rich local history awaits at a number of historic museum houses in town, including the Thoroughgood House (1719), the Lynnhaven House (1725) and the Francis Land House (1805), which are interesting sites to tour and learn stories about our country’s early ancestors. Through May 31, the Francis Land House is displaying “The Life and Legacy of The Marquis de Lafayette” traveling exhibit, highlighting Lafayette’s role in the American Revolution. There’s no better way to explore Virginia Beach’s maritime history and heritage than paying a visit to the Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum, conveniently located at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. For a close look at our nation’s colonial days the Historic Triangle–including Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown, approximately an hour drive north, makes a remarkable road trip from Virginia Beach.

Hatteras Village Offshore Open

Celebrating its 32nd year in 2026, the Hatteras Village Offshore Open continues to be one of the most popular fishing tournaments of the year along the southern Outer Banks, and is a fantastic chance to discover how incredible fishing off the Hatteras Island coastline can be. Based in the small town of Hatteras village on the southern edge of the island, this multiple-day tournament attracts anglers from all across the East Coast, and is one of the most anticipated fishing events of the year for folks throughout the Outer Banks, and miles beyond.

Fritz Boyden Memorial Youth Tournament

Wednesday, June 10th

Nags Head

Share a love of fishing with the youngest members in your vacationing party with this special fishing tournament that’s designed with youth anglers in mind. The Fritz Boyden Memorial Youth Tournament is an annual fishing tournament that takes place on the famous Jennette’s Pier, as well as Avalon pier, Outer Banks Fishing Pier, and Nags Head Fishing Pier. It is open to all anglers ages 16 and under. The age groups for competitors are 4-9 years old and 10-16 years old, and trophies as well as rod and reel combos are awarded to the largest fish caught by a girl and boy angler for the day. Participants in the “catch and release” tournament can enjoy a full morning of fishing before going to a celebratory and awards lunch close to the pier.

The Alice Kelly Memorial Tournament has been a tradition on the Outer Banks for more than 30 years, and is one of the most famous offshore fishing tournaments where only the ladies are allowed to compete.

This popular fishing tournament takes place all across the islands, and allows anglers to pick a favorite spot, cast a line, and hopefully reel in a few big catches, as well as a few hefty cash prizes, along the way.

October is renowned as prime time for fishing on the Outer Banks, and Nags Head anglers don’t have to venture too far to enjoy a surf fishing tournament that is wonderfully close to home. The Nags Head Surf Fishing Club Tournament is open to skilled and amateur anglers alike, and takes place all along the sunny Nags Head beaches, with plenty of room to cast a line in the hopes of reeling in some big catches, and some big prizes.

The group which hosts the tournament, Capitol City Four Wheelers, is based out of Virginia and is always looking for new members who love and promote safe 4WD accessible driving. For an October surf fishing tournament that revolves around driving along the incredible beaches of Hatteras Island, the Capitol City Surf Fishing Tournament is certainly one to watch.

NCBBA Red Drum Tournament

Wednesday, October 21st – Saturday, October 24th

Registration is currently open for the Annual North Carolina Beach Buggy Association’s (NCBBA) Red Drum Tournament. The tournament features more than $10,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs. The tournament offers miles of naturally isolated fishing grounds along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, allowing anglers to maintain social distance while enjoying the exceptional fall fishing conditions of the Outer Banks. Anglers fish from ORV Ramp 23 to Ramp 38, and possiblly Ramps 43 and 44 if judge availability permits. Anglers may fish where they please within the tournament boundaries, as there are no station assignments during the 60 hours of wide-open fishing. This year’s banquet and awards ceremony may be subject to restrictions by state or local authorities in regard to group gatherings, depending on the state of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Cape Hatteras Anglers Club Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament

Renowned as one of the oldest fishing tournaments on the East Coast, the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament is also one of the biggest Hatteras island tournaments of the years, with hundreds of anglers flocking to the southern Outer Banks for exceptional fall fishing that can’t be found anywhere else. With big prizes and plenty of opportunities to have fun off the beach, this tournament has become a generations-old tradition for local and visiting anglers alike.

June 14: Chalk the Walk

From 10am to 5pm, Chalk the Walk takes over the Virginia Beach Boardwalk as artists gather to turn the boardwalk into an impromptu canvas of color! During Chalk the Walk, participants create extraordinary four-by-four-foot chalk drawings along three blocks of the boardwalk. Competitors unleash their creativity with themed chalk drawings to be assessed by a panel of judges. Evaluation criteria include composition, use of color, adherence to the theme, and overall creativity. The competition features three divisions: Amateur, Professional, and Youth (ages 12-16). June 20-21: Point Break Music Festival

Ready to rock, reggae lovers? The brand new, two-day Point Break Music Festival, featuring renowned reggae artists from around the world, hits the beach at Virginia Beach Oceanfront this June. June 26-27: La Fiesta Virginia Beach

For two days, Virginia Beach celebrates the sights and sounds of the Latin experience! La Fiesta Virginia Beach possesses the key ingredients of authentic food, colorful cultural costumes and high-energy national Latin music. Latin Grammy Award nominees and winners headline concerts on the Beach stage at 24th Street each night. General Admission pricing for the Beach Concert Stage will be announced soon, as well as pricing for the Preferred Viewing Upgrade. Authentic Latino and Hispanic food vendors as well as retail vendors round out the festival experience.

The Dome

Experiencing a live show at The Dome is a must while in town. The premier entertainment venue opened its doors in early May 2025, with a meaningful performance by Three Dog Night, the band that delivered the final show at Virginia Beach’s original Dome that closed in 1994. The addition of The Dome has brought forth tons of excitement, as it is an ode to Virginia Beach’s original Dome that was built in 1957 and was the site for hundreds of iconic concerts like The Rolling Stones, Ray Charles and Jimi Hendrix before being demolished in 1994. The reimagined Dome will seat up to 3,500 in its live entertainment venue, and will be bringing the concert scene back to the oceanfront in a major way.

Despite it being a more than $350 million project overall, the park’s year-round operations will bring major benefits to the oceanfront and Virginia Beach’s economy as a whole.

A couple of recent acknowledgments include earning a spot on the New York Times’ “52 Places to Go in 2026” and Southern Living’s “10th Annual South’s Best 2026 Beach Getaways.”

Watermelon Mojito Mocktail

Serving size: 1

 4-6 mint leaves
1/2 oz simple syrup
4 oz watermelon juice
4 oz club soda
Ice
1 small watermelon chunk or slice (garnish)

Muddle your mint leaves and simply syrup then add ice. Pour in your watermelon juice and club soda, gently add ice then stir with a bar spoon. Garnish with your watermelon chunk or slice.

Spicy Mango Margarita

Serving size: 1

2 oz tequila blanco
1 oz lime juice
1 oz mango puree
3/4 oz triple sec or Cointreau
1-2 slices jalapeño (adjust to taste)
Tajín + lime wheel for garnish

Muddle jalapeño slices in a shaker. Add tequila, lime juice, mango puree, and triple sec with ice. Shake well and strain into a Tajín-rimmed glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a lime wheel.

Strawberry Basil Sparkle (photo at top of page)

Serving size: 1

 2 oz Vodka
1 oz Elderflower Liqueur
2 oz Prosecco
1 oz Simple Syrup
1/2 oz Lemon Juice
2 to 4 Strawberries
4 to 5 Basil Leaves

Muddle strawberries and basil, then add ice and vodka. Pour in the elderflower liqueur, lemon juice and simple syrup. Shake then top with Prosecco. Garnish with a strawberry and basil leaf.

Beyond the sandy shores and vibrant boardwalk, Virginia Beach offers a rich and diverse culinary scene. From fresh seafood to international delights, the city has everything you need to tantalize your tastebuds. 

Succulent Seafood

Situated on the coastline, Virginia Beach chefs are no strangers to serving the finest seafood. Lynnhaven Oysters take center stage as the local delicacy, served raw on the half-shell, steamed or Rockafeller-style – loaded with spinach, cheese and bacon.

Crabs are served in a variety of ways, whether it be in a creamy crab dip, savory bowl of she crab soup or as a crab cake. And when softshell crabs are in season, the restaurants are lined with diners who are craving the popular dish fried on a sandwich or paired with common sides. 

Local restaurants serve up fresh catches, like flounder, tuna, salmon, rockfish and more and prepare their fish a variety of ways. Try tasty tuna tacos topped with guacamole or indulge in a fried seafood platter with a little bit of everything. 

The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center also maintains the region’s Sensible Seafood Program by partnering with restaurants, businesses and communities. Their goal is to replenish fish populations by minimizing overfishing and overharvesting, and through farming.

Farm-to-Table

Speaking of farming, seafood isn’t the only thing that’s local. Virginia Beach has proudly embraced the farm-to-table movement with restaurants utilizing the freshest, seasonal local ingredients in their dishes. This allows diners to indulge in the flavors of the season while supporting local farmers and producers.

Pungo, Virginia Beach’s farming community, is the source of much of the ingredients that local restaurants use. The local farms allow guests to pick their own produce or shop from their market. Spring and summer are primetime for strawberry picking. Summer is also perfect for picking blueberries, juicy peaches and more. And local cattle make for hearty meat dishes that you can trust to be fresh and less processed. 

Globally Inspired Cuisine

In addition to succulent seafood and farm-to-table options, the area also boasts cultural cuisine from around the world. Being home to multiple military bases, Virginia Beach has many veteran-owned eateries that serve dishes inspired by overseas and generational recipes are also passed down through family-owned businesses. 

You can also find heaping plates of pasta at authentic Italian restaurants, Japanese sushi or poke, American favorites and so much more.

Liquid Libations

Of course, no culinary exploration would be complete without mentioning the vibrant craft beer scene, local wineries and signature cocktails. 

Virginia Beach has grown into a mecca for social drinkers. Trendy craft breweries can be found every few blocks, each one having it’s own special vibe. Embark on your own brewery trail and try out local IPAs, lagers and stouts. Or unwind at one of the city’s relaxing wineries while munching on a light charcuterie board that pairs perfectly.

In most recent years, distilling companies have also made their way into the scene. Get a taste for beach-inspired vodka cocktails and locally distilled whiskey spirits. Visit Tarnished Truth Distilling Company in the Cavalier Hotel, the city’s oldest distillery, which offers top-notch bourbon whiskey, bourbon cream, moonshine, vodka, gin and canned cocktails. You can also relax with a cocktail on the Cavalier lawn overlooking the ocean. You’ll also probably notice that everywhere you go, an Orange Crush is on the menu and yes, it’s a Virginia Beach staple curated of freshly squeezed orange juice, vodka, soda and of course, crushed ice.   

A Meal with a View

Virginia Beach offers the iconic experience of dining with a view. With 29 miles of waterways, from the ocean to the inland bays, the opportunities for scenic meals are plentiful. Whether you’re in a laid-back restaurant on the water or on a rooftop overlooking the shores, a good dish seems to taste even better when there’s a beautiful view.

Many restaurants throughout the city also feature outdoor seating, where you can relax and enjoy your food in the outdoors. Sit on the boardwalk side at one of the many oceanfront restaurants or chill on a patio while listening to live music.

While the list of incredible restaurants in Virginia Beach is endless, it’s safe to say you’re in good hands no matter where you choose. Enjoy fresh local fare served with friendly hospitality and get ready for unforgettable culinary experiences. After all, the dinner table is where some of the most cherished memories are made.

Welcoming visitors from near and far, First Landing State Park is an oasis for nature lovers. Situated on the coastline of the Chesapeake Bay, the park is 2,888 total acres featuring 1.5 miles of beachfront and 20 miles of trails. 

Camping: First Landing State Park is a sought-after camping destination with campgrounds, yurts and cabins available for rent. The park has campsites both with and without electric/water hookups and guests can find firewood at the Cape Snack Bar and Gifts. 

Beaches: Beautiful stretches of shoreline are found throughout First Landing State Park, but swim at your own risk, as there are no lifeguards in the Chesapeake Bay or at the Narrows. The Chesapeake Bay is your typical beachfront atmosphere, while the Narrows is a hidden gem that locals often take advantage of. With a smaller shoreline and calm waters, the Narrows is a common place to be for jet skiers, boaters and those seeking a more secluded beach experience.

Boating & Fishing: There’s a boat launch at the Narrows for those with motorboats and small crafts. This area is very accessible, as cars can enter through the 64th Street extension, and features include launching ramps, ample parking and restrooms. Fishing and crabbing are also popular activities throughout the park. You must have a valid Virginia saltwater fishing license in order to fish at First Landing State Park.

You can also go kayaking or standup paddleboarding in the tranquil waters at First Landing State Park. Chesapean Outdoors, one of the city’s popular rental and tour companies, offers 2-hour small group guided tours through the park. Or you can rent your own equipment from them and venture out on your own.

Trails: With 10 trails totaling about 20 miles, there are plenty of excursions to set forth on at First Landing State Park. Venture out on your own self-guided tour or follow along trail interpreters and guidebooks. The park is also friendly to bicycling and permits bicycles on the Cape Henry and Live Oak trails. To ensure your safety, be sure stay on the trails and don’t wander off course.

Wildlife: Discover native plants, get a glimpse of land animals in the forest or witness a variety of marine animals like fish and dolphins. As cute and friendly as the animals may seem, please do not feed the wildlife, as this can alter their natural behaviors and cause more harm than good.

First Landing State Park is open every day from 7 a.m. to dusk, with overnight areas accessible 24 hours a day when open.

Oceanfront

Both timeless charm and modern marvels await in the resort area. With a souvenir shop on every corner, you can take a piece of your vacation home with you and the variety of beachwear and surf shops will get you properly equipped for your beach days. For those with a penchant for nostalgia, there are classic beach shops down the strip that have been there for decades and for those looking for recent additions, brand new blocks of shopping centers have been added that cater to the city’s modern sensibilities and offer the latest trends.  

ViBe Creative District

Just blocks from the Oceanfront, you’ll discover a treasure trove of artisanal delights and creative inspiration in the ViBe Creative District. One-of-a-kind pieces created by local artists abound and there’s something for every type of art lover. Discover custom jewelry, hand-detailed leatherwork, furniture, textiles, paintings, ornate glassworks, ceramics and so much more. Shopping local continues on the weekends, as an outdoor market takes over 19th Street every Saturday featuring local bakers, growers and watermen.

Hilltop

Venture down Laskin Road and you will find yourself in the Hilltop area, where you’re spoiled for choice with an array of shopping centers and upscale boutiques. The Shops at Hilltop is a premier shopping destination with a collection of stores with products ranging from gifts, clothing, jewelry and decorative home goods. Robin Boutique is a vibrant boutique offering a curated collection of trendy and boho-inspired women’s fashion, accessories, and handmade creations. La Promenade Distinctive Shoppes also boasts big name brands, locally owned shops and restaurants. 

Town Center

Urban chic meets retail bliss in Town Center, where stylish boutiques and upscale retailers line the streets alongside restaurants and entertainment venues. It’s easy to spend a whole day shopping here,

The Strawbridge Marketplace is home to numerous national retailers and locally owned shops and there are also plenty of restaurants to enjoy between stores. Nearby Pungo also has tons of roadside markets offering the freshest local produce and meats.
